4. Microwave Network Analysis

Microwave networks consisting of LTI passive/active elements with input and output ports may be described by various matrix representations normally used for low-frequency circuits. These include [Z], [Y], [h], [g], [ABCD] parameters. Evaluation and measurement of these parameters require short/open circuit operations at the various ports of the network. In high frequencies these operations are not easy to achieve. Instead, it is much more suitable and practical to employ matched Z-terminations. Such constraint results in a well-defined zero-reflection conditions at a port. Thus, we present a network description based on incident (inbound) and reflected (outbound) waves at the various ports of a multiport network – enter the scattering (S) parameters.
